Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
