"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. A host of celebrated supporters have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their visuals repeatedly depict them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"Therefore all is invited to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Recognition

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed resilience demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will forever be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
